ICE DAMAGE IN ARKANSAS - JANUARY 2009 We were hit with a massive ice storm during the last week of January, 2009 that snapped more than 30,000 power line poles and left tens of thousands of folks without power for weeks. There was a great deal of damage done to hiking trails in many parts of the Ozarks due to downed trees across the trail. Some trails sustained heavy damage and are literally impassable and are closed. Most trails, however, escaped this damage and are open. Some trails we don't know about since no one has hiked them since the damage. Below is some information about specific trails, parks, or areas - note that this damage was limited to the OZARKS in northern Arkansas. OZARK HIGHLANDS TRAIL. All of the main trail from Lake Ft. Smith State Park to Wollum is now open for hiking - thanks to OHTA volunteers who contributed more than 2000 hours of difficult and dangerous labor working on chainsaw crews. *The Sylamore Section of the OHT remains closed - the forest service will not allow volunteers to work on the trail. BUFFALO RIVER AREA. All of the trails within Buffalo National River park are open for hiking. STATE PARKS. Hobbs State Park Conservation Area on Beaver Lake was hit hard and the trails there are closed. Many other state park trails are OK, including Devils Den and Lake Ft. Smith state parks - all of their trails are fine and open. KINGS RIVER FALLS trail is open with no damage (but there is a new trailhead location). OZARK NATIONAL FOREST. The Sylamore Ranger District sustained heavy damage and most of the trails there are closed (we have had a report that the lower section of the North Sylamore Creek Trail from Allison to Blanchard is open). Some other forest trails remain closed due to the ice damage including Alum Cove and Kings Bluff. Some popular trails that are OPEN include Pedestal Rocks, The Glory Hole, Shores Lake to White Rock Mtn. Loop Trail, Redding to Spy Rock Loop Trail, and Hawksbill Crag (and of course ALL of the Ozark Highlands Trail).
