DAYHIKES

March 4. DAYHIKE from Herrian Mtn/Beech Grove Rd to Herrods Creek and Indian Creek on the Ozark Highlands Trail. 7.2 miles, hike is rated moderate. Meet at the Redding Campground at 9:00am. Contact "Grey Owl" Barrett at 918-825-0500 to confirm. No pets.

 

March 25. Dayhike at Hobbs State Park - Conservation Area on the Little Clifty Loop, 9 miles.  This hike is part of the longer Hidden Diversity Trail. This new state park is just East of Rogers. Plans are to meet at 8:30am at the Van Winkle Trail parking lot on Highway 12 east of Rogers. This parking lot is paved, large, and brand new with bathrooms and signboards.  From there we will proceed to the Hidden Diversity Trail trailhead. OVERNIGHT HIKES

 

February 25 & 26. Overnight hike from the Boxley Valley Trailhead to Steel Creek on the Buffalo River Trail. The distance is 13.6 miles and rated medium. Plans are to meet at Steel Creek Trailhead at 9:00am. Hike will explore some interesting sights along the trail. E-mail Bob and Dawna Robinson to sign up or call 479-783-6319. Limited to ten hikers.

 

March 4 & 5. Overnight Fun Hike on Wolf Creek road for a mile or two and 700 feet down to a large and beautiful drainage junction. There camp will be setup and trips to explore the 3 different drainage directions will begin. There are waterfalls, springs, bluffs, overhangs and many other things to see using some old road traces and some bushwhacking that can become difficult. Meet at 7:00am at the Ozark Café in Jasper. March 11 & 12. Overnight Fun Hike on the OHT from the Hare Mountain Trailhead to the Lick Branch Trailhead. Meet at 8:00am at the Oark store - earlier if you want breakfast. Leave cars at Lick branch, shuttle to Morgan Field, camp at Briar Branch. Rated medium. Limit to 10 hikers. Email Dean LaGrone or call for details at 479-750-2550.

 

March 18 & 19. Overnight Fun Hike on the Ozark Highlands Trail from Arbaugh Road Trailhead east to Ozone, 14.8 miles.  Meet at the Ozone Campground at 8:00am. Please email Kerry Coe or call 318-549-3431 to sign up. Limited to ten hikers.

 

April 1 & 2. Overnight Fun Hike on the Ouachita Trail from Hwy 71 to Queen Wilhelmina State Park. 16.5 miles, rated medium.  Limited to ten hikers. Please email Kerry Coe or call 318-549-3431 to confirm and get more information,

 

April 22 & 23. Overnight Fun Hike on the Mt. Magazine Trail. The distance is 14.2 miles and is rated medium. Plans are to start at Cove Lake and hike up for a total elevation gain of 1753’ to the highest point in Arkansas. We will camp along the trail on Saturday night and hike out on Sunday. Plans are to meet at the Pack Rat at 7:00am or the Cove Lake Parking area on highway 309 at 9:30am. Please contact Bobby Shepperd to reserve a spot and get more details (479-442-5770). Limited to ten hikers.

 

TRAIL MAINTENANCE

 

March 4. We'll work the OHT in the Indian Creek area and Marinoni Scenic area. Meet at Redding Campground turn-off just beside Hwy. 215, 8am. For more info and to sign up e-mail Roy Senyard or call 479-587-0200. Tools will be provided and no work experience is necessary - just bring a pair of leather work gloves, and a daypack with water and lunch.

 

April Work Weekend In Hurricane Creek Wilderness Area. We'll have three different crews working this weekend - the first a dayhike crew to put up new blazes, and the other two crews will backpacking in from opposite directions and meet in the middle of the wilderness area to camp. This project is very important for the wilderness area and we would like to see 10 folks per crew. Anyone interested must call Roy at 479-587-0200 (or e-mail Roy Senyard) to sign up for any of the three crews by April 1st. Great way to see the Hurricane Creek Wilderness and make a difference. Overnight crews must have backpacking experience. SOME FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THE OVERNIGHT CREWS.

 

April 8. Crew #1. Leader Ed Hall will take a "day" crew from Fairview Campground and go east blazing and doing trail maintenance. This is a "Day Crew" only. There is still time to sign up for all three crews this week-end. Need to know if anyone wants to come out Sat. (Day Crew) or Sat. and Sunday (overnight crews). Have to know by Thurs. 8pm if anyone wants to sign up. Please call Roy Senyard @ 479-587-0200.

April 8 & 9. Crew #2. Leader Bob Robinson, will take an "overnight crew" east from Big Piney Trailhead and meet with the other overnight crew in the middle of the wilderness.

Crew #3. Leader Roy Senyard, will take an "overnight crew" form Chancel Trailhead west and meet Bob's crew in the middle to camp. Anyone on the overnight crews are welcome to stay Sunday night if they wish and if we have enough people to do so.

 

CLUB MEETINGS

 

March 12, OHTA General Meeting in Springdale. To get to the meeting site, from Hwy. 71 B in Springdale turn EAST on Emma street, go several blocks, then turn LEFT/NORTH onto N. Main Street, then pull into the parking lot on the right behind the building (across from Shiloh Museum—there is a map on the web page here). We'll have an interesting program - Backpacking in Patagonia with Joel Brown. We’ll start off with refreshments and social time at 7pm, with the meeting to follow at 7:30. April 9, OHTA General Meeting in Springdale. (there is a map on the web page here). We'll have a great program given by one of the most prolific outdoor guidebook authors in the Ozarks, Don Kurz. Don's books include Ozark Wildflowers, Illinois Wildflowers, Trees of Missouri, Shrubs and Woody Vines of Missouri, Seedling ID Guide for Native Prairie Plants, plus many more. He is currently working on Nature Lovers Guide To Missouri and Arkansas Trees guidebooks. Don is an accomplished photographer, and his slide program and talk about wildflowers is something you will not want to miss! And since Don will have copies of his books for sale, be sure to bring a pocket full of bills (or your own copies of his books so he can autograph them).We'll have refreshments and social time beginning at 7pm, with the meeting to follow at 7:30.
