NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2004 NEWSLETTER, #213

Neither OHTA nor our volunteer leaders are not responsible in any way for the safety of participants.
HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Visit the archives section (under the "Newsletter" link on the left) for previous newseltters.

SAVE A TREE, SAVE US MONEY, GET INSTANT INFORMATION—READ THE NEWSLETTER ONLINE. With this new web page format, it will be even easier and faster for us to post new information online. Hikes and work trips will be added/updated as soon as we get the info—no need to wait until the next newsletter! Plus there will be color photos, direct links to web pages, and some extra stuff that will not be in the normal newsletter. In an effort to cut down our mailing and printing costs (and save trees and oil), we are asking everyone to read the newsletter online here instead of receiving a hard copy mailed to them. You can always print out a copy if needed. If you would like to help out, and get your info as much as 2-3 weeks faster, send us an e-mail and tell us to remove you from the hard copy mail list. Then simply go online whenever you like to read the latest news, which will be updated throughout the month. If we do not hear from you, we will continue to mail a hard copy to you as always. IF YOU ARE READING THIS NEWSLETTER NOW ONLINE, PLEASE CONTINUE TO DO SO, and let us know to stop your hard copy from being mailed to you. Thanks!

E-MAIL LIST. If you would like to be reminded via e-mail of meetings and outings, or any other OHTA business (no SPAM), send a note to our Membership Chairman, Dean LaGrone, and you will be included on the e-mail list.

Hare Mountain Hikers at the 23rd anniversary Hike-In on October 9th

SOMEONE constructed this wonderful cover and placed it on top of the well at Hare Mountain - anyone know who did this - we need to give them an award - MANY THANKS whoever you are!

NOVEMBER
November 4. OHTA MOUNTAIN HOME GROUP MEETING, at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Office, 324 W. 7th in Mountain Home. The program is “Lighweight Backpacking” presented by Wendy Johnson. Call Wylaine Korbelik at 870-499-7315 for more info. The meeting will begin at 7pm.

6th & 7th. Overnight Fun Hike through Hurricane Creek Wilderness on the OHT. This is one of the more scenic sections of the entire OHT. Norma Senyard will lead. Contact her early to reserve a spot! The hike will begin at Chancel and end at Big Piney, a distance of about 13 miles. We'll camp at Greasy Creek (I wish it had a better name) and see beautiful scenery including the Natural Bridge. (479-587-0200)

13th - 21st - Modern Gun Deer Season is open (wear orange when hiking)

14th - OHTA General Meeting. Program will be given by Dave Zucconi from Tulsa, and will be a slide show and discussion about his recent hikes on the Colorado Trail. We'll have refreshments and social time beginning at 7pm, with the meeting to follow at 7:30. Click here for directions to the meeting.

20th - WORK TRIP ON THE OHT. We will work on some stubborn trail between White Rock Mtn. and Dockerys Gap; clearing out the corridor, cutting out trees, and general trail maintenance - this part of the trail is in pretty bad shape at the moment, so we need all the warm bodies we can get! Tools provided, but bring work gloves, water, and lunch. Meet at the Dockerys Gap Trailhead at 8am, and be ready to leave by 8:20am. Led by Roy Senyard, maintenance coordinator. E-mail or call Roy (479-587-0200) to let him know you are coming so he can plan for tools.

25th - Dec. 5th - Modern Gun Deer Season is open (wear orange when hiking)

27-28. Overnight Fun Hike on the Buffalo River Trail, Ozark Campground to Kyles Landing. Medium rated hike, 13.6 miles. Optional side hike from base camp to Goat Bluff (across river). Dean LaGrone will lead - contact him via e-mail to sign up and for more information.

DECEMBER
December 5th. Dayhike on the OHT from FR#1003 to Haw Creek Falls Campground. This easy 4.5 mile hike is either downhill or level most of the way, and visits Gee Creek and Haw Creek, ending at the famous Haw Creek Falls. Scott and Carolyn Crook will lead. Give them a call at 479-443-5162 for the meeting time & location (I heard something about meeting for breakfast as a possibility!), or e-mail.

11th - WORK TRIP ON THE OHT, Dockerys Gap to White Rock section. Tools provided, but bring work gloves, water, and lunch. Meet at the Dockery Gap Trailhead at 8:15am, or at the Pack Rat in Fayetteville at 6:45am. Led by Roy Senyard, maintenance coordinator - e-mail or call Roy to let him know you are coming (479-587-0200).

12th - OHTA General Meeting, Christmas Party, and Elections. The program will be given by Tim Ernst - one of his new digital slide shows (it will be a really good one, so be sure you don't miss it!). We will all gather at 7pm and share some tasty holiday treats - drinks will be provided, but please bring a treat to share, and your own table service. The meeting and program will follow at 7:30. We will also hold elections for club officers for 2005, and will be taking nominations from the floor to be voted on. If you would like to make a nomination before that time, contact any board member - ALL positions are open. Click here for directions to the meeting.

18th - DAYHIKE ON THE ROUND TOP MOUNTAIN TRAIL (near Jasper). Come explore this neat mountain with Tim Ernst, and visit the site where an air force bomber crashed during a training mission in world war two. This is a loop trail around the base of a wonderful bluffline, and we'll also venture up on top for some terrific views. Easy to moderate, from 2.3 to 3.6 miles total length depending on if you go up above the bluff or not. Bring a daypack with lunch and water. The first part of the hike is all UPHILL, but it soon levels out and the rest is pretty easy. This is considered one of the TOP TEN BEST DAYHIKING TRAILS IN ARKANSAS! Meet Tim at the trailhead at 10am - the trailhead is located right on Hwy. 7 just a couple of miles south of Jasper (easy to find - there is a big sign right on the highway). Be sure to e-mail or call (870-861-5536) the night before if the weather looks bad.

18th-20th - Muzzle Loader Deer Season is open (wear orange when hiking)

26th - 28th - Modern Gun Deer Season is open (wear orange when hiking)

UNSCHEDULED OUTINGS. Be sure to visit our Hiking Partners area frequently for hikes, work trips, and other outings that are not normal OHTA events.

TRAIL PATCHES AVAILABLE. You can now order either one of the color cloth patches pictured below. They are $4 each, and perfect for your pack, hat, or jacket. Order here.

NEW PUBLICATIONS AVAILABLE. There are three new publications available this month that would make great gifts for hikers (all available online).

• HURRICANE CREEK WILDERNESS MAP (available mid-November), published by Ozark Society books. It is a large-format topo map with all the contours and other details from normal USGS quads, all put together on a 24” x 36” map (color photos and some general info on the reverse). PLUS it includes the Ozark Highlands Trail route through the wilderness. The OHT guidebook is still your best resource for hiking, but this new map will show you even more details of this scenic wild area. $8.95

BUFFALO RIVER HANDBOOK, written by Ken Smith and published by the Ozark Society. This is a wonderful history book for our famous river, and includes 436 pages of tales and detailed info that only Ken Smith can tell, and will give you hours of enjoyable reading. Unfortunately there are no trail maps included, so you really can’t use it as a trail guide, but some of the info is keyed to the two Trails Illustrated maps that are available. $19.95

2005 ARKANSAS WILD & FREE CALENDAR, with photos by Tim Ernst. All images this year are brand new, never published before, and are from the Buffalo River area—see the photos in color on the web page. The premium quality of these calendars is so good you can frame each month when the year is done! $14.95

JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2005 OUTINGS

A note from our new outings leader: I am privileged to accept the roll of outings leader for 2005. I have been a member of the OHTA since moving to the Fayetteville area 11 years ago. As I think back on those years there are very few things that have stood the test of time for me. Fad diets have come and gone, electronic gadgets keep getting smaller and faster, and there are so many “things” sucking up every free second in our busy lives. But one thing always pulls me back, the OHTA. It is the one thing I get pure satisfaction out of every time I participate, whether in the meetings or the hikes. My most exciting memories of the great outdoors have been on OHTA outings. I can remember them all as if they were yesterday.

I challenge you this year to pick your day and find the time to get outside! Lead a hike and make a memory for yourself and most importantly for someone else who joins you on the adventure you create. Thanks in advance for your support this year and I will see you on the trail!
